Head of UN Women urges increased female representation in politics
Despite gains made so far, the progress in general is still "uneven and patchy" when it comes to achieving gender parity in the world's political sphere. This is according to the "Women in Politics Map" launched today by UN Women and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). At the launch, UN Women's Executive Director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, emphasised the need to overcome challenges and stereotype faced by women when running for office. To enhance women's political empowerment, the Head of UN Women called for sustained momentum, noting, "we do not have that option" of giving up.
